The Herman Miller Sayl chair is one of the most stylish office chairs of the brand. It’s easy to make a statement if you have this one in your home office. It’s got a unique design and it can easily pop out in a room.
It’s a very aesthetically pleasing office chair, that’s no doubt about that, but what does it have to say in terms of comfy and adjustability? Let’s take a peek if there’s anything more to the Herman Miller Sayl chair than its pretty exterior.
About the brand
Herman Miller is one of the most popular and leading manufacturers of ergonomic office chairs. And it sits on the higher tier too, with a more expensive price tag. it manufactured one of the most popular ergonomic office chairs on the market, the Aeron.
And though the brand is known for steeply-priced office chairs, it still has some office chairs that are made more affordable. But it’s not necessarily inexpensive so to speak, but it’s priced lower than the Aeron.
It’s a US brand and this will give a lot of consumers more confidence with the construction and build of the chair.
Unique back
One of the first things that you’ll notice with the Herman Sayl chair is its unique webbed back. It was actually inspired by the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. And the designer infused almost the same hanging suspension bridge mechanisms into the Sayl chair. And like the Golden Gate Bridge, it looks phenomenal too.
The unique webbing is a fusion of the desire to create a very minimalistic chair that used fewer materials. Hence, it can result in a lower price tag than that of the Aeron and the Embody. The back webbing design makes the chair more breathable and cooler. It’s made of an elastic mesh material. The shape of the back seat conforms to the shape of your spine.
At first glance, The criss-cross back seat may look a bit similar to that of the Aeron and Mirra. But the Sayl has a more flexible material for the back seat. And the chair is free from frames. The spineless structure of the Sayl chair sets it apart for the other chairs of the brand.
There are several advantages to having a spineless chair. There won’t be any frames that will pinch your shoulders at the back, especially if you’re a bit taller. The exposed spine of the Sayl might make it seem like a very delicate structure. Others may perceive it as flimsy, but it’s actually the exact opposite. The backseat is quite durable.
Going green
The Sayl chair, like the Cosm, is environmentally friendly. The entire chair is made from about 93 percent recyclable materials. So it’s a great fit for those who are trying to lessen their carbon footprint in the environment.
The Sayl chair is free from any PVC materials. So aside from an environmentally friendly chair, it’s also very lightweight.
Adjustability and customization
The Sayl Chair is cheaper than the iconic Aeron. But it isn’t necessarily inexpensive. But if I will rate its adjustability and rate it with the other popular Herman Miller chairs, it is inexpensive for a highly adjustable office chair.
The Sayl offers a decent amount of customizable features. It has adjustable support, a seat depth adjustment, seat height, and adjustable armrests. It’s one advantage it has over the Aeron, since the Aeron doesn’t have an adjustable seat depth.
I also love the gracious tilt the Sayl offers. If you love working in a tilted or semi-reclined position, you’d feel really comfortable in the Sayl chair.
It gives three options for the tilt. But don’t expect it to recline fully. If you want a fully reclinable weightless office chair, the Elysium office chair is a great choice. But you have to be ready to shell out more moolah, it can be expensive.
Though in terms of control, the Aeron and the Embody chair still have a lot of it compared to the Sayl. But with its price, you’d be happy with the performance of the Sayl chair in terms of adjustability.
These adjustable options don’t come with a basic Sayl chair, but you can always upgrade to enjoy these. If you have back problems, you can easily opt to upgrade your Sayl chair with the adjustable lumbar support.
Back support and seat padding
The Sayl has a very small backseat and it looks petite and slim. But what’s amazing about it, is that despite the small size, it feels nice on your back. There’s a lot of giving and support coming from the backseat. Suspension bridge technology does wonder for back support. It ensures that your weight was evenly distributed throughout the backseat.
And I think that’s one of the most notable advantages of the Sayl chair. The combination of a small profile and great back support is unique. You’d not find a lot of office chairs in the market with that amazing combination of features.
The seat padding is not that significant but it’s not that worrisome ether. And there’s not much to say about it. The seat is thinly padded so it can give decent firm support.
Flexibility
In terms of flexibility, it’s more flexible than the Mirra or the Aeron. The char adapted the flexibility and the technology of the suspension bridge. That’s why the chair is utterly flexible. It can follow your every movement. The combination of the suspension bridge technology and the soft mesh material makes it possibly the most flexible Herman Miller chair.
You can tilt whenever you want, or even stretch all the time with this chair. And you’d still have that support.
Modern beauty
It’s no doubt that this chair is handsome from whichever angle you’d look at it. It’s probably the first thing that you would notice in the chair. And that’s why I’ve introduced the Syal chair like that. And when you look at it from the sides, it looks clean, polished, and sleek. It is a clean, minimalist, and handsome office chair equipped with modern technology.
This and the Cosm come close when it comes to minimalist artistic designs. Though the Sayl is more comfortable than the Cosm.
Scope of users
The Sayl chair is a durable beautiful chair. It has a weight capacity of 350 lbs. Though this weight capacity might seem enough to fit those who are large, it’s not. The Sayl chair isn’t built for larger people. And the decent seat high adjustment is also not enough for larger people.
The Sayl chair is petite, sleek, and slim. That is what makes it unfit for larger people. And they might seem like sitting in a kid’s chair. Though I do not have any qualms on the durability, it’s just that the chair is just too small if you’re a bit on the heavy side.
What I wished were better
There’s a little tweaking that can be done with the Sayl chair. Though it’s a bit adjustable, one can only do so much. Though it can really be comfortable for some, it’s design isn’t universal. So before purchasing, you’ve got to try it first and see if your body loves the chair. But I guess that makes up for the minimalist design. The lack of a ton of controls made the way for a cleaner and simpler structure. And of course, the less expensive price tag than the Aeron and the Embody.
Who is it for?
The Sayl office chair is loved by those looking for a minimalist and modern office chair. You’d love this chair if you’re opting for a slightly affordable and green office chair. If you’re of average weight and looking for a more flexible chair, it’s an excellent choice. Those who love to stretch during the day would find the Sayl chair very giving. You can stretch all you want but you’ll still have that support. And if you have back issues, that can be alleviated with the optional lumbar support.
But then again, it can be an acquired taste, so to speak. Some people still long for the support of a spined chair with frames. And some are just loving the spineless support of the Sayl chair.
But for sure, it can pop out in a room. And it can also be a statement piece in your home office.
Conclusion
The Sayl chair may be an acquired taste, so to speak. It’s not for everyone. But like with the Cosm, once you see that your needs and body size are a fit, you’ll definitely fall in love with it.
